According to a recent report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, during the most recent year for which data is available, more than 86,000 children younger than five years old visited emergency rooms for accidental poisonings. In more than half of these cases, children ingested a product that is required by law to have child-resistant packaging. This disturbing finding should remind parents and caregivers of young children to keep all potentially toxic substances out of the reach of children whether or not they have child-resistant packaging. If there is any good news in all this, while child-resistant packaging is not foolproof, studies over the years show that such packaging has reduced fatal and non-fatal poisoning rates by about 40%.

According to a recent survey, more than half of physicians offer placebo prescription medications to make their patients feel better. A“placebo” is a substance that contains no active medicinal ingredients. These “dummy pills” are sometimes used in research studies when scientists compare an experimental treatment with a placebo to assess the treatment’s effectiveness. Any improvements that occur in the group receiving the experimental treatment that differ from those experienced by the placebo group can be seen as due to the action of the new treatment. While placebos contain no active medicine, they can produce positive (or negative) results. The power of suggestion is believed to play a role in this phenomenon, known as the “placebo effect.”

Colds are ten times more common than the flu, and you can catch them all year. The flu generally strikes from late October to mid-April. A cold is an upper respiratory infection usually associated with a runny, stuffy nose with thick greenish-yellow discharge, and a scratchy throat. Unlike a cold, the flu causes a fever of 102-104 degrees F. that lasts 3-4 days; chills; and an allover sick and achy malaise, a bad cough, and severe fatigue and weakness. The exhaustion can last for weeks: a cold rarely hangs on that long. Aflu test allows a fast diagnosis, which is important because the flu can lead to pneumonia, especially in older people and those with weakened immune systems.

Manufacturers of over-the-counter oral cough and cold medicines now say that their products should not be given to children under the age of four due to the risk of complications linked to inappropriate use. This caution was made in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which, along with the industry, had previously said that the cold medications should not be used in children under the age of two. Other doctors and consumer advocates urge rejecting the use of these medications until age twelve. Cough and cold medications are intended to treat cold symptoms such as runny noses and congestion. There is no cure for the common cold, which causes these symptoms, because it is caused by various viruses.
